The lord of nightmares!
Posted by Gemini on March 16th, 2009

Never heard of this game? It’s called Echo Night 2: Nemuri no Shihaisha — or Lord of Nightmare, if you consider the English title found on a record — and it’s the direct sequel to the first Echo Night. More news coming sometime soon.

Nope, never heard of that game. It’s obviously PS1, though.

Hey! I know this game! I imported it a long time ago, dumped many hours into it, and then lost interest when I picked up Dew Prism. It is very reminiscent of the original two Clock Tower games, especially in that you cannot ever really fight enemies, rather, you just avoid them.
It’s a good exploration type game. I look forward to seeing it in English; that is good enough of a reason for me to play the rest of the way through it.

Yes, that’s right!
It’s very similar to a Clock Tower game, set in first person…
It’s also one of my favorite PS1 games. I have wanted to see this game running in English just as much as Persona 2. I’ve put just as much care into making this script awesome as I did with Persona 2: Innocent Sin.
I’m really looking forward to this one.

This game should not take as long as Persona 2 did, I would think. Though I am certainly no veteran to game-hacking and translation, I do know that Persona 2 had vastly more text than this game does.
I look forward to this very much, though I am more than willing to wait as long as it takes to be done.
I played through the localization of the first Echo Night, and I was wondering if there were any mistranslations with its script? If so, will you be changing the script for part two for continuity?

For those who have an account on the board: you can use name id and password in the front page, too.

“This game should not take as long as Persona 2 did, I would think.”
The script translation was finished several months ago… However, there is a lot of hack-work that needs to be done. For example, every room name is stored graphically, and appears when you enter a room… All of that needs to be extracted, identified, matched with the script translation for consistency, edited, and reinserted as well… We’re also hoping to remove the Engrish from the game… Phrases like “Statue of Silent” and “No Smorking” kinda take you out of the experience, if you know what I mean.
“Though I am certainly no veteran to game-hacking and translation, I do know that Persona 2 had vastly more text than this game does.”
Of course… Innocent Sin had a huge script… But translating the script is just replacing text in a file… That’s the easy part, to be honest… The tough part is actually hacking it all in. Several hackers have attempted to do this game, but Gemini is the only one who is likely to finish it.

The translation of Echo Night 1 was not really a masterpiece, but it was rather faithful to the original, as far as I can tell. The story of Echo Night 2 connects to part 1, and all of the terms happen to correspond with Agetec’s translation for part 1. I didn’t go out of my way to make it match up. They just didn’t change things around in their EN1 translation… So nothing got mixed up in the shuffle. :)

What do you mean? I have been smorking since I was ten. I am joking, smorking is bad for one’s health.

I own and have played through the original Echo Night a long time ago and contrary to a lot of people I really enjoyed the game; I’ll probably replay it to get ready for this. ^_^ I’ve tried to get a hold of the 2nd one numerous times but I could never get a decent condition copy for some odd reason. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a hold of one soon.
@Choaticprime: You’ve played Dew Prism?! :0 There’s only one other person I’ve met that has played that game. It was one of my favorites when I was younger. :) I never liked playing as Mint though, I really only played through her scenario to see the extra ending. Rue was amazingly cool though.

Actually, one of the things that I’m really excited about is the opportunity to promote the Echo Night series directly.
You see, it’s possible to create a Japanese PSN account and purchase Echo Night 1 and 2 directly from Sony’s online store in Japan. I don’t know how this process works just yet, but I’ll try to repurchase the games this way, eventually, so I can go into detail about how to do it.
I think that this method is much better than finding a used copy (not that that’s an easy thing to do), because the money goes to the makers of the game rather than just an online store, or ebay. I think a sudden influx of Echo Night purchases and word of a translation may catch the company’s interest. :)

Yeah, the series, like the Clock Tower series, really deserves better attention. In America, however, the general pop mostly is into FPS games with bullet time or something similar. I think the fate of cool games with atypical game play are doomed to be purchased seldom and then remade by Capcom or Ubisoft into an action game with bullet-time.
@SlyStrife – Mint’s game had a funnier story, a few different bosses, and if you completed both scenarios you got to see the full ending, which was not only cool, but also suggested there would be a sequel.

Chaotic Prime: Speaking of Clock Tower trying to become mainstream (thanks to Capcom), they are making a Clock Tower Hollywood movie.

It’s a shame that they couldn’t get Jennifer Connelly to star in the movie. ;)

Honestly no, I didn’t get the message at all. Did you smoke too much crack, my friend?

I couldn’t figure it out either… I thought he was trying to hack your website or something.

Bah, I have recent backups anyway. Poor thing.
